High Mountain Stables near Mormon Lake has opened a new trail riding business just south of Rock Springs Café.
"We have about 36 head (of horses) on site here with 20 - 25 ready for trail rides," said owner John Williams.
Williams said he has been working on the plan for the stables for about a year-and-a-half with Rock Springs and BLM, from whom he had to obtain permits to offer rides on BLM land.
High Mountain Stables offers one- to two-hour rides without reservations. "If a half-day or more is needed, a reservation is required."
Originally from Oklahoma, Williams has been out west from Oregon to Nevada to Arizona, spending the past 13 years in this state.
Jeff Peters and Scott Tipton are the two wranglers at the stables. "I couldn't do this without the great people I have working with me," Williams said.
Rock Springs owner Richard Shaw said they will be working with Williams for possible future dinner cookouts and/or wagon and hay rides.
High Mountain also plans on having a petting zoo. Five goats, a miniature horse and Arnold the pig are already in residence. "We are a work in progress," said Williams.
The stable is offering mini-rides of about 10 minutes during special events at the Café, including Hogs 'n Heat on the first Saturday of each month.
High Mountain Stables received recognition in the Phoenix Magazine in 2007 as number 24 in the 52 weekend adventures issue.
