Prescott POPS Symphony grant to help Mayer school music program
Special to the BBN

Four area public school music programs, including Mayer, are recipients of substantial grants from the Prescott POPS Symphony Orchestra.

Totaling $11,000, the grants are designated to support orchestral and instrumental programs in intermediate or secondary publicly funded schools, said Shelley Brinkerhoff, chair of the POPS scholarship and awards committee.

Mayer will receive a grant for $3,000 for a new saxophone, instrument repair, and sheet music.

Other recipients include the Prescott High School band, Granite Mountain Middle School band, and Prescott Mile High Middle School band.

Brinkerhoff said the Prescott POPS Symphony Orchestra, founded by Prescott native Paul Manz in 1992, is dedicated to supporting and promoting quality instrumental and orchestral programs.

"This past year, the board of directors decided to use a significant amount of its financial resources for direct support of area school music programs," she said.

The next POPS symphony concert will take place at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22, at Yavapai College Performance Hall in Prescott.
