The Nov. 13 groundbreaking ceremony for the first of the trail repair projects at Hell's Canyon Wilderness begins just one of the projects for which the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona has received $15.2 million dollars under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
BLM received a $70,200 grant for the Hell's Canyon project as well as several other trails.
A total of 33 miles of recreation trails will be repaired including Hell's Canyon, Harquehala Peak Pack, Vulture Peak, Sophie's Flat, Burro Flat, Spring Creek, Horse Spring, Needle, Williams, Slaughterhouse, Balancing Rock, Black Rock Mine and Treasure Canyon trails.
BLM has hired two Arizona agencies to complete the work: Tucson-based Southwest Conservation Corps and Flagstaff's Coconino County Community Services. These agencies provide employment programs for young men and women and are modeled after the 1930's era Civilian Conservation Corps.
Future BLM events include the Jan. 8 groundbreaking ceremony for the new ARRA Black Canyon Trail National Recreation Trail project, and on Jan. 9, the 10-year anniversary of the Agua Fria National Monument.
