The Mayer Area Meals on Wheels received a $1,000 grant from the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) in recognition of the success of its 2009 March for Meals campaign.
The Mayer Area Meals on Wheels event included a breakfast and a Walk-a-thon led by Yavapai County Chairman of the Board Tom Thurman, who joined more than 1,000 mayors nationwide in delivering meals.
"We raised more than $3,500 and are enjoying a renewed interest in our organization and its mission," said Director Mary Yorgensen. "As always, we have received a positive response from our communities, (Cordes Lakes, Spring Valley, Mayer, Poland Junction, and Dewey-Humboldt) which makes all the work that goes into this annual public awareness and fundraising campaign worth the effort."
March for Meals is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage involvement on the part of the local community. The campaign takes place in March because that was the month in which the law that includes senior meal programs in the Older Americans Act was enacted. The local program partnered with the Mayer Elder's Club volunteers which cooked breakfast, and the many community members who pledged and walked for the cause.
