This Week

Tuesday, Sept. 18

A meeting to select dates for the 2013 Community Calendar will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. Various local organizations meet to choose dates during the year so each organization has a specific date for their activities. This prevents several fundraisers happening on the same day. Come and represent your organization.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

Julie Keeney of Angels Home Health Care will make a presentation on Alzheimer's Care and Management at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Mayer Area Meals on Wheels. Come ask questions and receive answers from someone who knows.

Friday, Sept. 21

The Cordes Lakes Library will show "Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3" at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited.

Saturday, Sept. 22

Mayer Elders Club Fundraiser Ring of Fire Poker Run, Saturday, Sept. 22. Registration is 7-9 a.m. $20 per poker hand. Three vehicle categories: 4x4s, Side-by-Sides and ATVs. Payouts for each category. Mayer Area Meals on Wheels will serve breakfast of biscuits/gravy, sausage, scrambled eggs and beverage, 6-9 a.m. $5. For more information call Casey at 928-713-9799.

Tuesday, Sept. 25

The NACOG Medicare Advocate will be at the Mayer Area Meals on Wheels Tuesday, Sept. 25, to answer any questions. Call for an appointment - 632-7511.


Mayer Elders Club 2012 Outstanding Citizen Award will be given to a citizen in the Mayer-Cordes Lakes-Spring Valley area who has demonstrated outstanding service and kindness in 2012. Nominations accepted through Dec. 31. Include paragraph on why you think this person deserves the award. Mail to Mayer Elders Club, P.O. Box 14, Mayer, AZ 86333 or e-mail mycrocodile@commspeed.net.

Mayer Elders Club General Meeting will take place at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Mayer Senior Center. Everyone welcome.

Mayer Area Meals on Wheels will have Casino Night on Saturday, Sept. 29, starting with the store at 4:30 p.m. with play beginning at 5 p.m. Games include blackjack, 5-card stud and Texas Hold'em. Come as a Flapper, a gangster, a silent screen star or come as you are.

Chips are 20 for $10 and store items can be bought with chips or cash. Pizza and snack trays will be available for sale. Our newest attraction will be the "Speak Easy." All proceeds benefit Mayer Area Meals on Wheels.

The Mayer Area Meals on Wheels free trip to Fry's, Walmart and Trader Joe's takes place on Thursday, Sept. 27, Call for reservations, 928-632-7511, our van will pick up at your home.

Living with Loss Support Group meets at the Mayer Senior Center every Tuesday 12:30-2 p.m. For more information, call Sherry Aponte at Hospice of the Pines, 928-632-0111.

Cordes Lakes

The newly formed Cordes Lakes Dog Club meets the last Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. Discuss training, behavior, problems, and enjoy meeting and talking with your neighbors.

Cordes Lakes Stables now has room for more horses. Contact Tom at 98-853-1973 for more information.

CLCA will host a community yard sale on Oct. 6. You must place your own signs out to designate your sale site.

A Halloween Costume Dance for adults will take place Oct. 19 at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. You are not required to wear a costume, but it all adds to the fun.

Annual Oktoberfest will take place at Mountain of Faith Lutheran Church, 20135 E Stagecoach Tr. in Cordes Lakes, from 4-7 p.m. on Sat. Oct. 13.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy music, door prizes, white elephant sale, raffle items and an authentic German meal. Tickets are $6.50/ adult and $3/children under 12.

Mayer Elders Club Bake Sale at Bank of the West in Mayer, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until the goodies are gone. on Friday, Oct. 5.

Al-Anon open meetings are Mondays at 9:30 a.m. at the Cordes Lakes Community Center. Call Len, 632-9064.

First Southern Baptist Church on Pinto in Cordes Lakes hosts a youth group, grades 7 to 12, every Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Youth Director Jen Fellars provides games, fun, worship and purpose. Contact her at 623-556-6018 for more information.

TOPS starts at 8:15 a.m. for weigh-in and 8:30 for meeting on Fridays, following the exercise class.

Exercise Class starts 7 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Classes are free. Chris Shackelford is leading the exercise classes.

The Cordes Lakes Event Planners meet Tuesdays at 9 a.m. at the Community Center.

A weekly Jam Session day takes place at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Bill Teahon's house, 20273 East Quail Run. Bring your instrument and join the fun. For more information, call Bill at 772-6044.

There are three food programs in Cordes Lakes. The 60 plus program (age and income restricted) is the second Wednesday. Commodities are on the third Wednesday, with produce on the fourth Thursday. Bring plastic bags or boxes to carry produce. Bags and boxes are not available. Also, if you have a small cart to carry your produce, bring it with you. Do not bring dogs or other pets as they are not allowed in the food area. Call the community center, 632-9769, or Linda Giguere, 632-7552, for more information.

Cordes Lakes Brush Yard is open the third Saturday, from 7 a.m. to noon.

Big Bug Gem & Mineral Club meets the third Tuesday (Sept. 18) at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. Contact Art Frame 928-713-5492 for information.

Love Ministry is at 14720 S. Stagecoach Trail in the mobile at the Extra Self Storage. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m the third and fourth weekends of the month. Contact Carol Peck at 928-899-5050.

Mayer Fire has its open board meetings on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the main location on Highway 69.

Big Bug Charity Quilters meet every Monday at the Mayer Senior Center from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Carpenter's Pantry Food Bank is at 10051 S. 2nd Street, Mayer. Get fresh produce every Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. It will be open the last Saturday of the month from 9-11 a.m. Springs Church sponsors the free food bank for people living in the Hwy 69 corridor. For information, call 713-5492.

Other Areas

Grants To You (GTU), a local nonprofit agency next two-session class on Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29. The two sessions (both required) will be at the Town Library in Prescott Valley in the second floor Computer Lab.

The $25 registration fee can be paid in advance with Pay Pal through the web site or by mailing a personal check to 7085 N. Coyote Springs Road, Prescott Valley, AZ 86315; c/o Susan Bailey Smith. There are 20 seats available, register online at www.grantstoyou.org

The Black Canyon City Riders will conduct the first horseshoe tournament on Sept. 29 at the Black Canyon Equestrian Park. It will be a 50-team tournament; $25 per person, blind draw. An additional $25 per team to choose your partner. Double elimination with a 50 percent payback to the top six teams. Proceeds will go toward the Black Canyon Equestrian Park's continuing projects, i.e. dirt work, bleachers, etc. For more info or to sign up, call Renee at 602-790-8541 or Jody at 602-330-4917.

Sanders Ranch Supply in Black Canyon City will be holding a Spay Neuter Clinic Sept. 28. Sign up is necessary. To reserve your pet's spot, call Sanders Ranch Supply at 623-374-5570. It's the right thing to do.

Verde Valley Fire Agencies present the 7th annual Dice Run on Saturday, Sept. 29 to benefit the Trauma Intervention Programs of Arizona. All 2, 3 and 4 wheel vehicles are invited! The event includes a ride throughout Verde Valley and Sedona and ends at the Moose Lodge in Clarkdale for dinner, music, and raffles. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at Verde Valley Medical Center, Cottonwood. Kick stands up at 10 am. Riders are $20 and passengers $15.
