Mayer Water reminds customers to conserve until rains fall
Some tips to conserve water
• Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for a cold drink.

• Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. Reuse the water on houseplants.

• Shorten your shower by a minute or two and save up to 150 gallons per month.

• When running a bath, plug the tub before turning the water on, then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.

• Don't use running water to thaw food; defrost food in the refrigerator.

• Bathe young children together.

• Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up. Use to flush toilets or water plants.

Office Manager Casey Boone, with Mayer Water Improvement District, said this past week that well levels keep dropping.

"We need rain, and this heat is not helping matters. We also need our customers to help conserve," Boone said.

He encourages residents to decrease, or temporarily stop, watering lawns and washing cars. Water usage has increased, and he wants people to be aware of how they are using the water.

"I understand that people enjoy their yards, but at this stage it is more important to make sure that we have water for household use," he said.

Boone encourages people to check for leaks - especially making sure the float is adjusted properly in their swamp coolers - in their toilets and outside hose bibs, etc.

Don't leave the water running while brushing teeth or doing the dishes. Re-use bath water to water outside plants, if possible, he said.

The water company's website at www.mayerwaterdistrict.com has a link near the bottom of the home page with 100 ways to conserve water.
