John S. Daugherty, Jr.
John S. Daugherty, Jr. passed away on June 8, 2010 in Prescott, Ariz. He was born on July 13, 1923 in Middletown, Pa. and moved to Phoenix in 1959.
John was a World War II veteran, a police officer in Harrisburg, Pa., managed an auto parts store in Sunnyslope and was a technical writer for Sperry/Unisys before he retired and moved to Spring Valley in 1975.
Through the years, he was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Foresters and the Mayer Volunteer Fire Department. He was extremely proud of his Irish Heritage and could be found at most Phoenix Area Irish events when his health permitted. He and his wife Betty were Irish Persons of the year for the Phoenix St Patrick's Day Parade Committee in 2006. They were also the King and Queen of the Mayer Days Parade in 2004.
John always had a story to tell or something funny to say to lighten up your day.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Nora; his son Tom; and his grandson Chris Bangert. He is survived by his brother, Carl; his wife of almost 57 years, Elizabeth; his sons, Cary (Dana) of Sedona and Jim (Anne) of Phoenix; his daughters, Jenifer (Ed) of Middletown, Pa.; and Patricia of Pocahontas, Ark.; as well as 12 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
A memorial service was Friday, June 11, 2010 at Calvary Chapel, 2313 Highway 69, Prescott, Ariz., where he was a long-time member. A celebration of his life was Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the home of Jim and Anne, 824 W. Pershing Ave., Phoenix, Ariz.
Donations in lieu of Flowers may be made in John's name to the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix or the Prescott Calvary Chapel.
