Black Canyon City archers place at Mormon Lake event
Black Canyon City archers placed well at the Morman Lake 3D Archery Shoot on June 12-13.

Lacey Sanderson and Katelyn Glover took first place in their classes and Jake Glover third in his class.

Several adults in the group did not place but still enjoyed themselves.

Young archers from the Black Canyon City Archery Club have excelled in recent competitions.

Lacy Sanderson of BCC took first place in the Archery Challenge, shooting a 255 out of 300, and second in Wild Life Identification at the 1st Annual Youth Hunter Education Challenge at Ben Avery Shooting facility on May 22.

About 30 students participated in the Shoot.

Orme's Turner wins two state titles
The Orme School's Theo Turner ran off with a pair of individual titles in the Class 1A state track and field meet at Arizona State on Saturday.

The junior won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.55 seconds, and the 200 in 23.21.

Also for the Warriors, Tony Ndunda was second in the 800 (2:06.32), Kaleb Johnson was fifth in the 3,200 (10:34.22) and 10th in the 1,600 and Metehan Akcam was ninth in the 200 (24.80).

Mayer, Orme schools begin baseball season this week

Mayer and The Orme school will start their respective baseball seasons this week. The Orme School hops right into the thick of district play in their opener March 2, when they host San Pasqual Valley (Calif.) in a doubleheader before the BBN's press time. Mayer is scheduled to take on Phoenix Country Day School on Friday.

Ricardo Olivares, Orme's first-year track coach, inherits a solid boys' squad that features junior sprinter Alphonso Broom - a relay runner who as a sophomore placed in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

Theo Turner and Metehan Akcam have been The Orme School boys basketball team's big guns all season.

They proved that once again in the Warriors' Class 1A state tournament quarterfinal matchup with Valley power Gilbert Christian Feb. 13, combining for 42 points.

Tony Warburton and the Mayer boys basketball team accomplished what they set out to do this season by making it to the Class 1A state tournament.

Still, he and his teammates were far from satisfied after their first-round matchup with 2009 state runner up Elfrida Valley Union.

The Orme School topped visiting Phoenix Day School for the Deaf 64-37 in this past Wednesday's Class 1A, West Region tournament first-round matchup, while Mayer downed host Bagdad 68-40.

For Orme, Theo Turner led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.Metehan Akcam added 19 points and five rebounds.

The Dewey-Humboldt Little League will register players on Saturday at Humboldt Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; on Feb. 20 at Mayer Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; on Feb. 27 at Humboldt Elementary from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on March 6 at Humboldt Elementary from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Blake Ambrose had 29 points - including three 3-pointers - and 10 rebounds in the Wildcats' 67-46 win at Salome on Jan. 12.

Tony Warburton also sank three 3s, finishing with 15 points, while Alex Sapien tallied 9 points and 15 rebounds.

Mayer basketball team takes on 'big guys' in tourney

The Mayer High basketball team had a rough start but ended strong at the 3-day, 18-team Bradshaw Mountain Holiday Hoops Classic tournament in Prescott Valley this past week.

In Monday's 8:25 a.m. game, the Cimarron Memorial Spartans, a 4A team from Las Vegas, Nev., (the state uses only 1-4A designations, unlike Arizona, which is 1-5A) overwhelmed the 1A Wildcats 107-34.

Two of the best individual performances in the history of Arizona high school basketball took place last season just 25 miles apart. And it wasn't in the Valley or in Tucson.

Bradshaw Mountain's Jordan Weir and Mayer's Aaron Sullivan put their names into the state record books with the likes of Mike Bibby, Jerryd Bayless and Channing Frye.

Orme delivers 56-0 blowout in first round of state tourney

Orme was scorching Gila Bend 42-0 fewer than four minutes into the second quarter when the mercy rule kicked in and the game went to running clock.

Few teams on the winning end would opt to go to the hurry-up in that situation, but the Warriors did. Nothing against the visitors, but they needed their reps.

Mayer roars back in second half for Homecoming win

Mayer head football coach Rick Lashley was less than excited at halftime of Friday's homecoming game against Beaver Dam.

The game was all tied up at 14-14 at the break. But in the second half, Mayer showed what it was capable of by pulling away for a 42-14 win over the Diamondbacks (3-3 overall, 1-3 region).
