The Orme School, Mayer boys qualify for state in 1A West
Turner, Warburton top scorers for their clubs

The Orme School topped visiting Phoenix Day School for the Deaf 64-37 in this past Wednesday's Class 1A, West Region tournament first-round matchup, while Mayer downed host Bagdad 68-40.

For Orme, Theo Turner led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.Metehan Akcam added 19 points and five rebounds.

For Mayer, Tony Warburton was out front with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Blake Ambrose had 13 points and 10 rebounds; Alex Sapien tallied 12 points and 20 rebounds; Dimitri Campbell had seven points and 15 rebounds and Jacob Martinez chipped in seven points and 10 assists.

With the wins, both boys' teams advanced to the region's state tourney seeding bracket in the Valley on Friday, where they faced each other for the third time this season.

The Warriors swept the Wildcats in regular season play, and play-offs were no exception. Orme won a close one at Phoenix Valley Lutheran, 57-51.

Theo Turner scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in the 1A West Region tourney semifinal win.

Metehan Akcam added 17 points and 13 rebounds for Orme.

Mayer's Blake Ambrose and Alex Sapien had 15 points apiece.

In Saturday's region final, the Warriors allowed Valley Lutheran to jump out to a 25-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and could never recover.

The Warriors secured the Region's No. 2 seed for this week's state tourney.

Theo Turner led Orme with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Hakim Mitchell added 14 points of his own.

The Warriors leading scorer on the year, Metehan Akcam, was held to nine points.

The Wildcats rebounded from Friday night's loss to Orme to secure the region's No. 3 seed, avoiding a state tourney first-round matchup with the South Region's No. 1.

Tony Warburton led the way with 23 points, while Alex Sapien added 17 and Blake Ambrose 12, in Mayer's 71-49 victory over Joy Christian.
