Once again it is that time of year. The Mayer Firefighters did our annual Adopt-A-Family for our district.

Individual firefighters, not the district, try to adopt at least three families for the Christmas holiday. We get our families through the Mayer Elementary school. Thank you, Wendy, for all you do each and every year.

We use money that we collect through the year, and two very special members of our hometown give donations as well. Without them I truly believe that we would not have this program. A huge thank you goes out to them and they know who they are.

We provide a complete Christmas dinner for each family and about five wrapped gifts for each child. On Christmas Eve the on-duty crew for that day picks up Santa (he flies in from the North Pole just for this event!), and delivers the gifts on the fire truck.

Countless hours goes into this program every year, and every year it seems to get better. My wife and children, spend roughly 20 to 30 hours shopping and picking out gifts for each child on our list. Once more, the firefighters could not do this program without you. Thank you for the time you have donated every year. We couldn't do this without all of you.

DPS and Phoenix Fire also have helped out when they can. Thank you to them as well.

Once all the shopping is complete, I load everything into my truck, take it all to the station and we all start the wrapping process and separate all the food. This takes about half a day. Then we load it all up, pick up Santa and start the deliveries to our families.

I look at it this way. While we are at work, we see people on their worst day. With the Adopt-a-Family program, we now can see at least three families on a much better day.

The feeling we get when we see the kids smile or a mom, a dad, or a grandparent cry is something you just cannot explain. What a joy it is to be a part of this program each and every year.

A huge thank you to all the Mayer firefighters who have helped out with this program each year. Without ALL of you, none of this would happen. Merry Christmas to all.

Richard La Rue
