Photo Gallery: 2010 Dewey-Humboldt Little League season opener
Arizona's oldest Little League - Dewey-Humboldt Little League - opened its 2010 baseball season Saturday, April 10, at the Humboldt Elementary School ballfield. Following opening ceremonies the Hot Rods, the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers churned up the chalk and put smiles on faces with a 3-way T-ball game to start the day's baseball games. Photo Gallery: 2010 White Cane Parade
The Black Canyon Bicentennial Lions Club conducted its 25th Annual White Cane Parade in Black Canyon City on April 3, 2010. The parade had 35 entries of every variety from horses, motorcycles and vintage cars, to kids and adults and clowns. The community and visitors turned out along Old Black Canyon Highway in the perfect weather to enjoy the parade and a community festival afterward. Heidi Dahms Foster shot these photos.

Photo Gallery: The storm and flood of Jan. 21, 2010
The entire week had been wet and windy, but on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, the full force of a massive storm unleashed itself on Arizona, and particularly on Black Canyon City, where the Agua Fria River normally meanders through several low water crossings in a mannerly way. But during the night of Jan. 21, 2010 the river was a terror, flooding an entire mobile home park, creating a new channel to flood a neighborhood that had not been in danger before, isolating some 25-30 homes on the west side of town, and threatening the Agua Fria Bridge on Old Black Canyon Highway.

Santa's elves traded in the sleigh and rode into Mayer on motorcycles on Dec. 12, 2009. A little rain didn't deter nearly 50 riders from the Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group (PMRG) from taking the trek up I-17 to distribute toys, clothes, bicycles and blankets and to 25 Mayer Elementary School children for the second straight year.

Tuesday, Sept. 29 was a "red flag" day in the Mayer area, in which wind speeds and low humidity combine to create perfect conditions for wildfires to get out of control. When a house fire started in Mayer that afternoon, firefighters from agencies all around the county had to fight hard to keep the blaze from spreading through Mayer.

The annual Yavapai Cattle Growers Calf Sale and Barbecue took place on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2009 at Maughan Ranch in Peeples Valley. The Yavapai Cowbelles raffled off a beautiful quilt to pay for scholarships. More than 1,000 people attended the event, which included western vendors, homemade ice cream, roping dummies, fishing for the kids, a calf sale, and ranch Quarter Horse Sale. Photo Gallery: Thanksgiving storm
Black Canyon City received 1.30" of much needed rainfall in the Thanksgiving storm 2008. Black Canyon Creek flowing over Marin Road had a black tint to the runoff due to the recent colorization of the pipeline in the area. The photos are both of Black Canyon Creek - the one across Marin shows better how black the water was. The other photo is the stormy weather in the Bradshaws on Thanksgiving Day. CLCA Luau Dinner Theater 2008
The Cordes Lakes Community Association put on its first-ever dinner theater on October 4, 2008 with an authentic island meal of Kahlua Pork and all the fixings, and a program of hula dances performed by the CLCA ladies and lead by Pat Williamson, who studied hula while her husband was stationed in Hawaii in the Air Force. Guests packed the community center in Cordes Lakes for the popular event, which raised money for community programs. Heidi Dahms Foster took these photos.

JuneTeenth Jazz Splash
JuneTeenth Jazz Splash at Arcosanti

A variety of entertainers played and sang at the 10th Annual JuneTeenth 'Jazz Splash' Festival this past weekend at Arcosanti. For three days Lady J, Genevieve, Big Pete Pearson, the Cunninghams, and the Canon Fire Jazz Band kept the audiences entertained and asking for more. Many of the entertainers came from Las Vegas to play at the festival along with several that got their start in Jamaica and made their way to the states and finally to JuneTeenth. The rave reviews of the bands continued and as the weekend came to a close, many returning audience members commented that "the festival gets better and bigger every year." Driving the old fashioned way
Several driving enthusiasts brought their horses and buggies to Mayer Saturday, April 19 for a clinic with longtime trainer and Mayer resident Don Fernwalt. Fernwalt spent the day fine tuning his students' driving skills, answering questions, and helping them fit harnesses and bits. The clinic was popular with passers-by on Central Avenue, as they stopped to enjoy the sight of the horses, ranging from Arabians to minis, pulling their owners in light carts and buggies on the breezy day. Mayer Egg Hunt 2008
Children young and younger enjoyed the festivities at the Mayer Easter egg hunt at Centennial Park on Saturday. The event featured egg hunts for all ages, burgers and hot dogs cooked by the Mayer Fire Dept. firefighters, raffles for prizes, and plenty of sunshine. In between egg hunts, kids enjoyed the park's playground equipment. Wal-Mart, Wagner's Market, Costco, Mayer Fire, Mayer Community Church and the Mayer 4-H group sponsored the event. Wildflower Extravaganza
The wet winter and spring is giving Arizonans an exceptional wildflower display. The spring burst of desert color is a favorite time of year for photographers and flower lovers. The Arizona poppy is painting yellow carpets of blooms on hills and mountainsides throughout the southern regions of the state. The purple Arizona lupine grows amongst poppies and in its own fields of purple blossoms. The north part of Lake Pleasant, the desert areas of the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains in the Spring Valley, old Cordes, Cleator and Black Canyon City areas offer plenty of wildflower areas to view and photograph.

It flows only once or twice a year, but when it does, the elusive Castle Creek waterfall is a spectacular site. Heavy rain and snowstorms during the past month created enough water for the falls to flow. These photos were taken March 5.

Labor Day
BB/CCN celebrates an impromptu Labor Day. On Feb. 26, photographer Bruce Colbert spent the day photographing workers from Mayer to Black Canyon City. The workforce is the backbone of any community, county, state and country. This a tribute to those workers.

In 1970, Italian architect Paolo Soleri started building Arcosanti on a bluff overlooking the Agua Fria River near Cordes Junction. The project is world-renowned as a masterpiece of Soleri's philosophy of combining architecture and ecology - arcology. Soleri apprenticed under Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1950s. Full-time employees live in apartments integrated into the architecture. The world-famous Soleri Bells are made and sold in the gift shop. Visitors can tour the grounds, watch artisans shape and pour bells, eat meals at the café prepared by international chefs and spend a night in one of many guest rooms. Old Cordes
Historic Cordes is located about 8 miles southwest of Mayer on Antelope Creek Road. John and Lizzie Cordes bought the Antelope Station stage stop and bar in 1883 after a drunken customer murdered the owner. Antelope Station became Cordes after John Henry opened a U.S. Post Office there. In its heyday, Cordes ran cattle and sheep, operated a bar, restaurant, boarding house, and a gas station and automotive repair shop.

Chauncey Ranch Map Class
More than 70 volunteers braved cold air, muddy ground, and a partially frozen and rain-swollen Agua Fria River Feb. 5 to learn basic mapping and GPS tracking skills at Chauncey Ranch. On June 21, the same volunteers will map and track wet and dry segments of the Agua Fria River to establish the river's flow during its driest time of the year. Lainie Levick, assistant project coordinator, said, "We want to get a snapshot of one day in the life of the river when it is at its driest, which is traditionally just before the monsoon storms arrive." Trail Dedication
Residents and excited visitors to Black Canyon City enjoyed the official opening of the Black Canyon Trail Saturday, Feb. 9. The project has been in the works since 2004, when Black Canyon Trail Coalition member Bob Cothern and a small group of volunteers started the organization and asked for help from hiking, biking and horseback riding groups.

Last Trail Day

More than 20 volunteers hike, biked and horse-backed more than 4 miles Dec. 15 to work on the final section of the Black Canyon Trail. Trail builders had to cross the icy Agua Fria River to get to the work site. Workers connected the finished sections of trail and completed the first half of the 62-mile trail. The trail starts at Carefree Highway and ends northwest of Mayer in the Prescott National Forest. The trail is built by hand. Trail tools, including a jackhammer, are carried by volunteers and on the backs of horses. Storms stranded trail crews and horses carried supplies to them.

Horse Rescue

When a three-day rainstorm filled the Agua Fria River the first week in December, trail crews from the Southwest Conservation Corps became stranded on the west side of the Agua Fria River. The crews were working on the Black Canyon Trail for two-week stints. Babs Sanders, Ruth James and Richard Smith volunteered their horses to carry water and food to the stranded crews. On Dec. 5, Bob Cothern, of the Black Canyon Tail Coalition, and Troy Dymock, U.S. Forest Service employee, led the trio of riders and packhorses to the crews' campsite.

Mayer FFA

After one semester as Mayer High School FFA teacher, Ross Dilts remodeled the barn, re-opened the greenhouse and started hydroponics, constructed two aquaculture tanks to cultivate fish, dug a pond for future game fishing and built a pier to fish from. Students and volunteers helped with all aspects of the work.

Santa Claus visited Mayer Elementary School Dec. 21. Superintendent Pat Dallabetta and Santa arrived on a Mayer Fire Truck. Principal Anita Jack alerted the students who ran to the playground for hugs and goodies from Santa Claus.

Wall Hike

Cliff Hersted, an amateur anthropologist, took members of the Arizona Archaeological Society to an unidentified wall on Perry Mesa in the Agua Fria National Monument. Hersted identified other walls on Perry and Black mesas that he believes are ancient Native American pronghorn hunting walls. Pueblo ruins and artifacts are located in the vicinity of this wall.

Spectators cheered and honored veterans during the 5th Annual Veteran' Day Parade Nov. 10 in Black Canyon City. More than 30 entries paraded past the crowds under a clear sky and cool breeze.

Curly's History Tour

Troy Gillenwater took members of the Black Canyon Historical Society and other guests this past November to Curly McKibby's cabin on Humbug Creek in the southern Bradshaw Mountains. Gillenwater met Curly in the 1970s and they became lifelong friends until Curly's death in the late 1980s. The cabin is on private land and is accessible by hiking unmarked trails. Curly lived in the remote location without electricity or plumbing. He built the cabin and all the stone-laid roads and retaining walls by himself. The cabin appears undisturbed since Gillenwater last visited it in the 1990s.
